“I’ve Found My Day to Day Less Stressful,” Andrew Says Thanks to WorkBC Assistive Technology Services

A man cleans a glass window.

Andrew is a Building Service Worker, doing custodial work, minor plumbing work, as well as miscellaneous tasks at a shelter.

“I have a moderate to moderately severe hearing loss,” he shares. “This loss has greatly affected my employment and type of employment. I’ve gravitated towards jobs in which I can be primarily left to my own devices. This often is isolating, and limiting in scope of jobs.”

He learned about WorkBC Assistive Technology Services from Surrey Hearing Care, and decided to apply. He was approved for funding that covered most of the costs of a new set of high quality hearing aids.

“Without this assistance, I would have been scraping together funds for quite a while, and would have settled for whatever was cheapest,” he explains.

The new hearing aids have made a big difference at work.

“I’m far more communicative with my co-workers,” he says. “I’ve found my day to day less stressful. Communication gives me anxiety to a degree due to the force of effort the act of listening and understanding can take.”

Andrew says the hearing aids have made him more confident in his abilities, and has expanded the scope of what he feels he can do for work, something he’s keeping in mind as he navigates his career.

“I will recommend the Assistive Technology Services program to anyone else with a disability,” he says. “This program should be widely known.

“I know myself, I’d probably not have these hearing aids for a very long time without this program.”

WorkBC Assistive Technology Services is operated by Neil Squire. Assistive Technology Services are available to individuals who have a work-related barrier due to a disability or a functional limitation. This may include barriers related to traveling to and from the workplace.
