“It Has Leveled the Playing Field for Me,” WorkBC Assistive Technology Services Removes the Barriers to Full-Time Employment for Donovon
Donovon works as a Web Services Manager, which involves managing web services, extensive typing while communicating with clients, and precise mouse work for digital updates. He describes the role as “technically demanding and sedentary,” working up to nine hours a day at a workstation. However, arthritis in his shoulders, as well as ADD, anxiety, and depression, were making it difficult for him to work full-time.
“My arthritis causes significant pain and stiffness when I am required to sit in a static position or reach for standard peripherals for long periods. This physical discomfort limits my work stamina and focus. Additionally, managing ADD means that being strictly sedentary makes it difficult to regulate my attention; I focus better when I have the option to move or change positions,” he continues. “The combination of physical pain and the restriction of a standard desk exacerbated my anxiety, making it difficult to get through the workday.”
After being referred to WorkBC Assistive Technology Services by his local WorkBC Centre, Donovon was provided an ergonomic assessment from our team of occupational therapists. With his needs identified, he received an electric sit-stand desk to allow for posture changes, a fully adjustable ergonomic chair for proper spinal support, and a specialized ergonomic keyboard and mouse to reduce shoulder strain.
“The program has been instrumental in removing the physical and mental barriers that were threatening my ability to work full-time,” he shares. “Physically, the sit-stand desk and ergonomic peripherals have drastically reduced the arthritis pain in my shoulders by allowing me to work in a neutral posture and change positions frequently.
“Mentally, this flexibility has been a game-changer for my ADD. Being able to stand and move while working helps me regulate my focus and maintain productivity without the distraction of physical discomfort,” he continues. “By addressing both my pain and my need for movement, the program has improved my daily stamina and reduced my work-related anxiety. It has given me the confidence that I can sustain my career long-term without sacrificing my health.”
Thanks to the accommodations, Donovon no longer hits a “pain-wall” mid-way through the day due to the “constant background noise” of pain, and he can more deeply focus on complex tasks for longer periods of time. The standing desk, meanwhile, ensures he remains engaged and on-task during long virtual meetings or detailed coding sessions.
“These accommodations have transformed my workday from a battle against discomfort to a productive, sustainable routine,” he says. “Because I am no longer stopping frequently to manage pain or anxiety, my overall efficiency has increased. I can complete precision tasks (like graphic editing or coding) with greater accuracy and speed, as the equipment supports my body rather than fighting against it.”
Donovon is grateful for the service he received from WorkBC Assistive Technology Services.
“I would absolutely recommend the Assistive Technology Services program to anyone facing barriers to employment,” he explains. “What stood out to me was the holistic approach. They didn’t just hand me a catalogue; they provided a professional assessment that validated my specific challenges both physical and cognitive. For anyone hesitating because they aren’t sure if their condition ‘counts’ or fits the mold, I urge you to reach out.
“This program does more than provide equipment; it provides dignity and sustainability. It has leveled the playing field for me, allowing me to focus on my skills as a Web Services Manager rather than my limitations. It is an invaluable resource that genuinely changes lives.”
