Justina Stays on Her Feet Easier With WorkBC Assistive Technology Services

WorkBC Assistive Technology Services participant Justina

Justina works part-time as a medical office assistant at a physiotherapy clinic in Comox. Her job includes everything from cleaning and dressing the patient rooms, answering the phones, and taking payment for appointments.

However, the job is physically demanding and taxing on her body.

“I have struggled with lower back pain for more than a decade, which affects my ability to lift heavy objects, as well as stand or sit for long periods of time,” she explains. “I also have extremely painful planters fasciitis, flat feet (no arches), weak ankles, and heel spurs which affects my ability to stand or be on my feet for long periods of time.

“Without some crucial arch support and proper professional footwear, this condition would be far more debilitating than it currently is.”

Her WorkBC employment counsellor in Courtenay referred her to WorkBC Assistive Technology Services.

“I received plenty of help from ATS with my above conditions, particularly with my feet. My custom orthotic insoles cost $500 and my extended health benefits only covered a portion of that. ATS paid for the rest, which is amazing. I also needed 2 pairs of custom orthotic shoes for work, and ATS also paid for these as well.”

Justina “absolutely, without question” recommends WorkBC Assistive Technology Services to others, noting that she has already recommended a friend to the program.

“I have noticed a significant difference in my ability to stay on my feet all day at work, with much more ease than before with the help of the above supports. My overall health, well-being and strength in my feet, ankles and lower legs has improved significantly since wearing the shoes with the insoles, in my physically demanding workplace,” Justina shares. “In turn, this has affected my mood, my stability, and my keenness to continue being more active, now that it’s easier to do so.

“I am eternally grateful for [. . .] the support they have provided me. I will forever remember this experience as a positive one.”
