WorkBC Assistive Technology Services Gives Lonnie the Confidence to Start His New Career

Lonnie was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, chronic renal failure, and type two diabetes in 2018, forcing him to find a new career.

“This had left me with life changing circumstances where I found myself looking for a new career because physical work was no longer an option,” he explains, noting he also has hearing loss in his right ear.

His WorkBC employment counsellor helped him find a new career as a medical transcriptionist, and he passed his certification with honours. However, Lonnie found that his office set-up was lacking for his new career, and his employment counsellor referred him to WorkBC Assistive Technology Services.

“Assistive Technology Services has helped me above and beyond any expectations that I had,” he says. “Before they set me up, I was using a 42 inch television as a monitor and I only had a wooden kitchen chair. I was set up with two monitors, monitor arm, new chair, hearing aid, new headset that accommodates my hearing aid, ergonomic keyboard and mouse, and as a result of all of this, my production has almost tripled.

Lonnie “absolutely” recommends WorkBC Assistive Technology Services to others, saying that it helped him to double his paycheque in his new career while working less hours.

“This has given me a more functional workspace and also a more comfortable position to work from,” he says. “It has also given me the confidence that I needed as I was starting a new career and felt as though I was beating my head against the wall because I felt like I was not very productive.

“[They set] me up with everything I needed to be truly successful.”

WorkBC Assistive Technology Services is operated by Neil Squire. Assistive Technology Services are available to individuals who have a work-related barrier due to a disability or a functional limitation. This may include barriers related to traveling to and from the workplace.
