“I Could Never Have Done This on My Own,” WorkBC Assistive Technology Services Helps Margaret to Keep Working

A bottling machine.

At Margaret’s work, she runs a filling machine which fills small vials and requires a lot of focus. She has hearing loss — particularly making it hard to distinguish ‘f’ and ‘th’ sounds — which led to her sometimes misunderstanding directions at work, and also made it difficult to hear when the machine was not operating properly.

“I was having a hard time understanding people clearly, which caused a few misinterpreted conversations,” she shares. “This became very frustrating for me and hard for me to do my job.”

Through WorkBC Assistive Technology Services, Margaret received funding for the hearing aids she needs for work.

“The hearing aids have changed my work life immensely. I can hear my co-workers and focus on my machine, it has made it easier to follow instructions,” she says. “I could never have done this on my own, and probably would have eventually had to quit my job because of the stress.

“I am less stressed and anxious, as I can hear what is happening around me.”

Margaret says she would “without a doubt” recommend WorkBC Assistive Technology Services.

“Thank you so much, this is an amazing program, and I am so grateful,” she shares. “I never thought of this as a disability until I almost lost my job because of a misunderstanding. I am so relieved to have found answers to the problem so I can keep working.”

WorkBC Assistive Technology Services is operated by Neil Squire. Assistive Technology Services are available to individuals who have a work-related barrier due to a disability or a functional limitation. This may include barriers related to traveling to and from the workplace.
