Heather Grateful to “Better Perform” at Her Job with New Hearing Aids

For over 20 years, Heather has helped students from across the globe learn English as an English Second Language teacher. But now she’s having an easier time inside the classroom, thanks to hearing aids purchased with the help of WorkBC Assistive Technology Services.

“I feel less tired and frustrated in class since I don’t have to ask for repetition or apologize for not being able to hear. I also feel less isolated in social situations,” she explains.

“Before I received the hearing aids, I was constantly asking students to repeat themselves which was upsetting to the students as well as myself. Since using the hearing aids, the number of times I ask for repetition has been greatly reduced which has had a positive effect on the students self confidence. I also evaluate the students language and I now can evaluate more accurately and fairly.”

As an ESL teacher, Heather is “responsible for developing curriculum plus daily lesson plans, as well as evaluating the students’ progress.” But recently, it was becoming more of a challenge

“I went for a hearing test and I was assessed with hearing loss,” she explains. “[It] directly affects my ability to hear students and provide support to help them improve their English. I also evaluate students language which was being affected by my hearing loss.”

Her audiologist had a suggestion.

“When I explained to the audiologist why my hearing loss has affected my work, she mentioned Assistive Technology Services and suggested that I contact WorkBC for help.”

Before long, she was on her way.

“Assistive Technology Services helped greatly in providing funding for a pair of hearing aids that were recommended by the audiologist for my type of hearing loss.”

Heather is “thankful” for the help.

“I would definitely recommend Assistive Technology Services to others in need. I was impressed with the professionalism of the program and their willingness to help throughout the application process,” Heather shares. “It is a very important program and am grateful for the help that was given to me to better perform at my job.”
