“These Accommodations Have Turned out to Be Life Savers”

Tracy works as a diagnostic technician at an eye clinic in Salmon Arm. Every day in a fast-paced busy clinic, her job includes performing retinal scans, fundus photography, medical billing, and assisting patients with their ophthalmic concerns.

She has hearing loss, as well as pain in her feet from pes planus (flat feet) and a hallux rigidus (stiff big toe).

“[It] was impacting my everyday work life,” she shares. “I was experiencing foot pain while on my feet all day, also I was facing challenges of hearing patients correctly in such a busy working environment.”

Her audiologist at Connect Hearing referred her to WorkBC Assistive Technology Services.

Through WorkBC Assistive Technology Services, she received hearing aids, as well as custom orthotics for her foot pain.

“The Assistive Technology Services program helped me obtain the disability-related instruments and financial support I needed to be able to function properly in my workplace,” she explains.

The hearing aids and custom orthotics have made a big difference in Tracy’s work day.

“These accommodations have turned out to be life savers, allowing me to fully function at performing my expected duties and tasks at my workplace on a day-to-day basis. I am able to hear patients properly when working with them, and movement throughout the office with my orthotics is now bearable,” she says.

“I no longer feel uncomfortable by not hearing patients voices properly. I can function properly in a busy work environment, as well. Also, with orthotics, I can stand for long periods of time without constant foot pain.”

Tracy says she “absolutely” recommends WorkBC Assistive Technology Services to others.

“I am so grateful [. . . for] the support this program has provided me. Applying was made easy, and assistance provided at every step of the way. Thank you!”
