WorkBC Assistive Technology Services Helps Gabriel Move Safely at Work

Gabriel is self-employed in the tech field. He works in an office and needs to wear leg orthoses for moving around in the office space, as well as to and from work.

“I have a bone condition, osteogenesis imperfecta, commonly known as ‘brittle bones.’ The condition makes me easily susceptible to fractures and therefore needing braces for support. These create challenges to carry out my work tasks,” he shares.

He needed new orthoses after a long period of usage, as his old braces were breaking down and required frequent repairs and maintenance, which he often needed to take time off work to address. His orthoses provider referred him to WorkBC Assistive Technology Services for funding help.

“[WorkBC Assistive Technology Services] provided financial assistance to help in getting the needed orthoses replacements. The replacements ensure safety of performing work tasks and mitigating the risks posed by using old braces,” he says.

Gabriel recommends WorkBC Assistive Technology Services to others in need.

“Having these new devices enabled me to carry out tasks in a safer and assured manner,” he explains. “[I have] confidence in knowing new devices will provide support and safety while performing work tasks and knowing the number of repairs will be reduced for the immediate future.”

WorkBC Assistive Technology Services is operated by Neil Squire. Assistive Technology Services are available to individuals who have a work-related barrier due to a disability or a functional limitation. This may include barriers related to traveling to and from the workplace.
